Sobeys is full of exciting opportunities, and we are always looking for bright new talent to join our team! We currently have a full-time opportunity for a Data Engineer. This role is based out of our office in Mississauga, ON.
Here’s where you’ll be focusing:
As a Data Engineer with Sobeys, you will:
- Be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting robust data solutions primarily on Snowflake and the Azure data ecosystem.
- Play a hands-on role in building and optimizing data pipelines, writing efficient SQL code, automating deployments, and ensuring the reliability of production jobs.
- Collaborate closely with architects, analysts, and business teams to enable data-driven decision making across the enterprise.
- Write complex SQL queries, stored procedures, views, UDFs, and create/managing tasks, streams, and pipelines in Snowflake.
- Manage end-to-end deployment lifecycle including version control, CI/CD pipelines, production support, and troubleshooting of deployed code.
- Design, build, and maintain pipelines and dataflows; debug and optimize ADF jobs for performance and cost efficiency.
- Build and maintain interactive Streamlit applications within Snowflake to provide self-service analytics and intuitive access to business data.
- Leverage Snowflake Intelligence, Cortex AI, and other Snowflake native AI/ML features to enable predictive insights, natural language querying, and advanced analytics capabilities.
- Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architectures to support ingestion, transformation, and delivery of structured and semi-structured data.
- Partner with data architects, analysts, and product teams to design scalable solutions aligned with enterprise architecture.
- Implement role-based access, security policies, and data governance practices to ensure compliance and data integrity.
- Monitor pipelines/jobs, proactively identify issues, and implement solutions to enhance reliability and performance.
- Support business and innovation teams to ensure that data products and reports meet requirements.

- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field.
- 2+ years as a Data Engineer (or similar role) with hands-on Snowflake and Azure Data Factory experience.
- Strong proficiency in SQL development (queries, procedures, performance tuning).
- Experience with Azure Data Factory, Data Lake Storage, Databricks, or Synapse.
- Working knowledge of Python (preferred) or similar scripting languages.
- Solid understanding of ETL/ELT concepts and best practices.
- Experience with RBAC, security policies, and data masking/tokenization is an asset.
- Exposure to reporting tools such as Streamlit, Power BI or Tableau (nice to have basic knowledge).
- Strong problem-solving abilities, ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams, effective communication skills.
